Airbnb connects people who offer stays, experiences, and services with guests who book them through its platform. This nine-block canvas is our analytical interpretation of Airbnb's business, not a diagram issued or endorsed by the company. It uses Airbnb's 2025 annual filing and current help pages rather than assuming that an older fee percentage or product mix still applies.
The nine canvas blocks
01
Customer segments
Guests seeking accommodation or other bookable offerings and hosts who supply them are the two essential sides. Within each side, needs differ by location, trip purpose, property type, and hosting scale.
02
Value propositions
Guests can discover and book a range of offerings in one place; hosts gain listing, scheduling, pricing, messaging, payment, and support tools. The value depends on relevant supply, reliable information, and trust in the transaction.
03
Channels
Airbnb's website and mobile app are the booking channels. Search, advertising, referrals, and repeat use can bring people to those channels; their relative contribution should not be inferred from the canvas alone.
04
Customer relationships
Self-service discovery and booking are paired with messaging, reviews, support, and policies. Hosts and guests may need different assistance at setup, during a reservation, and after a problem.
05
Revenue streams
Airbnb charges service fees associated with bookings. Its help center describes both split and single-fee structures for stays during a transition, as well as different treatment for services and experiences. There is no single timeless percentage for every booking.
06
Key resources
The platform, brand, host supply, guest demand, data systems, payment capability, and support operations are central resources. The hosts' properties are generally host-provided inventory, not rooms Airbnb needs to own for this model.
07
Key activities
Product development, search and matching, host onboarding, payments, trust and safety, support, and marketing help the marketplace function. Local regulation and quality management make operations more complex than a simple listing directory.
08
Key partners
Hosts are indispensable supply-side participants. Payment processors and other service providers support transactions and operations. This canvas does not assume an undisclosed exclusive partner or a fixed revenue-sharing arrangement.
09
Cost structure
Technology, personnel, marketing, support, payment processing, trust programs, and regulatory compliance all require resources. Their amounts and accounting treatment should be taken from filings, not guessed from a marketplace sketch.
How the two sides reinforce each other
A guest is more likely to search a platform with useful, reliable local supply. A host is more likely to list where there is demand and a workable set of tools. That is a marketplace feedback loop, but it is not automatic: poor quality, weak support, high prices, or restrictive local rules can reduce participation on either side.
Airbnb's annual filing describes host onboarding and tools such as scheduling, integrated payments, pricing, messaging, and reviews. It also says the website and app help guests discover and book homes, experiences, and services. These disclosures support the canvas categories above, while the grouping into nine blocks remains our interpretation.
Fees and booking value are not the same as revenue
Airbnb's service-fee help page explains that the platform has split and single-fee arrangements for stays and is moving hosts toward a single-fee structure. A host's listing price, the guest's total charge, the host payout, and Airbnb's recognized revenue are different concepts. Use the current booking breakdown for a specific reservation rather than applying a fixed historic percentage.
The 2025 annual report defines gross booking value to include host earnings, service fees, cleaning fees, and taxes, net of cancellations and alterations. That measure is not interchangeable with Airbnb revenue. The report says revenue from a booking is recognized upon check-in, which also means bookings and reported revenue can fall in different periods.
What the canvas cannot tell you
A canvas shows relationships, not whether a given market, product, or host cohort is profitable. To evaluate performance, use current company filings and distinguish booking volume, gross booking value, revenue, costs, and cash flows. Check reporting definitions before comparing periods.
Regulation of short-term rentals and services differs by place and can affect available supply. Airbnb flags travel demand, competition, trust, payment operations, and regulation among material risks in its annual report. Any claim that the model works identically in every city would overstate what this framework can explain.
