Digital PR Services: What They Should Actually Deliver

A practical way to evaluate digital PR work across research, outreach, content, and measurement.

Digital PR uses online channels to help a useful, verifiable story reach relevant people. It can include media outreach, an accessible newsroom, expert commentary, a source-linked report, and follow-up with people who have questions. The service is not synonymous with buying backlinks or posting the same release on many sites. Decide which audience needs the information and why before paying for a distribution list.

Start with a story and a measurable objective

A product launch, community initiative, and expert research report each need different evidence. Write down the claim, the primary source behind it, who can answer questions, and any limitations. Identify the people who would benefit from knowing it. A journalist's beat and readers matter more than the apparent size of an outlet's homepage. PRSA's ethical principles favor accuracy, disclosure, and fair dealing over attention at any cost.

AMEC recommends defining communication objectives and intended audience changes before counting outputs. A placement may be a useful step, but it does not prove awareness, understanding, or a sale. Establish a baseline such as relevant referral visits, qualified enquiries, or informed questions, then choose a measurement method proportionate to the campaign.

What to ask a provider

Research and editorial work

Who checks the underlying facts, interviews the spokesperson, and approves final copy? A catchy draft without verification is a liability.

Outreach process

How are contacts selected and updated, and how will the team avoid irrelevant mass email? Ask to see an example of a tailored angle.

Paid versus earned

Which placements are sponsored, syndicated, or independently editorial? Get the distinction in writing before a campaign starts.

Reporting

Request live URLs, dates, outlet context, corrections, and a clear definition for every number. Do not accept an unexplained media-value total as return on investment.

Keep the result useful after publication

Maintain the source material on an owned page, update it when facts change, and make a real person available for follow-up. Search visibility is possible when a page answers a genuine question, but no ethical provider can guarantee that a news story will rank or that a publisher will link. Google Search Console can show how your own pages appear in Search; on-site analytics answers different questions about visitors' behavior.

Review whether the campaign reached the intended audience and whether the information helped them act. Correct errors promptly and keep paid relationships visible. The most durable digital PR asset is not a one-off list of URLs; it is a credible record of what happened, why it matters, and where someone can check the evidence.
