Blocking is one way to stop unwanted interaction on Bluesky. It is stronger than muting: Bluesky says a block prevents the two accounts from seeing or interacting with each other's posts in its app, while a mute mainly changes what the muting user sees and is not announced to the other account. Neither setting makes previously public content private across the internet, so use reporting and account-security tools as well when harassment or impersonation is involved.
Block an account
Open the account's profile in the Bluesky app or on the web. Open the profile's more-options menu, usually shown as three dots, and choose Block. Check that you selected the intended account, especially where handles look similar. The exact placement of the menu may change between app versions; use the current moderation controls if a screenshot from an older guide does not match your screen.
To review your decisions, open Settings and look for Moderation, then the blocked accounts list. You can remove a block from that list or from the person's profile. Unblocking does not undo a prior report, erase a screenshot someone already saved, or make a public post private. Pause before reversing a block if the account was abusive or impersonating someone.
Choose the right safety tool
Mute
Use muting when you mainly want to stop seeing an account. Bluesky says a mute is private to the person applying it.
Block
Use a block to prevent account-to-account interaction in Bluesky's app. Bluesky says block records on its open network are public.
Report
Report a post or profile through its menu when it violates platform rules; blocking alone does not alert moderators.

Know what a block cannot guarantee
Bluesky is built on an open protocol and says posts, likes, and blocks are public data. A person may still encounter publicly available information through other services or accounts even when the app blocks interaction between two accounts. Avoid describing a block as invisibility, anonymity, or a complete privacy setting. Do not put sensitive personal information in a public post because you expect a block to hide it.
If you are receiving threats, stalking, or identity misuse, preserve relevant evidence and use the platform's reporting route; consider appropriate local support for immediate safety concerns. For ordinary unwanted conversation, muting or blocking may be enough.
