The most reliable way to find a specific person on Bluesky is to use a handle or profile link they shared themselves. Names can be duplicated and handles may change, so verify the account before following or messaging. Search, starter packs, and an optional Find Friends feature can help when you do not know the exact handle.
Start with the person's own link
Look for a Bluesky profile link on the person's official website, newsletter, or another established account. Open that link directly and compare the bio, linked domain, posting history, and context. A familiar name or profile photo alone is easy to copy. If the person uses a domain-based handle, check that the domain belongs to the person or organization you mean to find.
Use search carefully
Search the name, known handle, publication, or organization in the Bluesky app, then look at the People or account results if offered. Bluesky's published search tips also describe operators such as `from:handle` for finding posts from a known account. Search interfaces evolve, so use the app's current labels rather than relying on one permanent menu path.
When several similar accounts appear, cross-check outside Bluesky before sending a message or sharing personal information. A profile with many followers is not automatically authentic.
Explore trusted recommendations
Starter packs are shareable collections of recommended accounts and feeds created by users. A pack from a trusted colleague or community can introduce relevant people, but inclusion in a pack is not identity verification or endorsement by Bluesky. The platform's original starter-pack guide explains that packs are shared by link and may be previewed in the app.
Optional Find Friends and privacy
Bluesky introduced an opt-in Find Friends feature in December 2025. Its published description says users verify a phone number and upload contacts, with a match shown only when both people participate and have each other in their contacts. Initial availability was limited to certain countries and mobile apps; check the current app for availability and read its privacy policy before opting in.
You do not need to upload a contact book to find a person by public handle or a shared starter pack. If privacy matters, begin with those lower-disclosure methods and ask the person for their profile link directly.
