Managing Reputation in Local Search

Keep local business information accurate and use genuine customer feedback to improve trust in search and maps.

Local business listing and customer feedback planning

Local reputation begins before anyone leaves a review. People searching for a nearby business need to know whether it is open, where it operates, what it offers, and how to reach it. An incorrect address or unanswered service complaint undermines trust even if the average star rating is high. Focus on verifiable listing information and a reliable customer experience; search visibility is not a reason to manufacture praise.

Keep the public record current

Check the business name, location, service area, hours, categories, phone number, website, and accessibility details on the platforms relevant to your customers. Update special hours and closures promptly. Link to a clear website page that explains the service or location in ordinary language. Google's Search Essentials favor helpful, reliable content for people rather than pages built mainly to manipulate search rankings.

Use real photos of the premises, team, or work where appropriate and permitted. Make sure images are current and do not depict a service or facility the customer will not actually find. If a listing changes ownership or moves, follow the platform's processes so old information is not left to mislead people.

Handle reviews consistently

Invite fairly

Offer the same review opportunity to real customers regardless of whether the interaction seemed positive.

Reply usefully

Address the issue without publishing a customer's private details or copying a generic answer to every complaint.

Report violations

Flag content that breaches the platform's rules through its reporting workflow; a negative opinion alone is not enough.

Improve operations

Connect repeated comments about hours, availability, or service to a person who can fix the underlying problem.

Evaluate what changed

Monitor whether people can find accurate information and whether location-specific questions are being answered. Compare review themes and direct inquiries over a meaningful period. Do not promise a fixed ranking position from a number of posts or replies; search results involve many factors outside a local business's control.

FTC guidance cautions against deceptive review solicitation and purchased praise. Google states that reviews should reflect genuine experiences. A reputation plan built around truthful information and responsive service is more durable than a campaign to push a star count up at any cost.
