Tanzania Specialist reported that its safari guides had seen several unusually pale wild animals in northern Tanzania in 2022. Guide Joseph Abel Laizer described sightings of baboons in Arusha National Park, a giraffe and zebra in the Serengeti area, and a buffalo in Tarangire. The operator's published interview includes his firsthand account and photographs of some of the animals.
The observation does not establish a measured increase in the prevalence of albinism across Tanzania's wildlife. More guides, tourists, cameras, and online sharing could also change how often sightings are recorded. Laizer discussed possible genetic and habitat factors, but the announcement did not present a population survey capable of separating those explanations. A pale animal also requires careful identification before its appearance is attributed to a particular pigment condition.
