Announcement
Max Avery announced Synaptic in July 2026 as a local-first tool for turning an Obsidian vault into a linked, searchable knowledge base. The project was released under an MIT open-source license and was described as free to use.
According to the launch announcement, Synaptic can work with Ollama so model processing stays on a user's own hardware. When no local model is available, the project falls back to non-model rules rather than requiring a cloud service.
The release described evidence-backed tagging, privacy classification, redaction of sensitive material, and tools for connecting the vault to coding assistants. These were project features described at launch; users should inspect the current repository and documentation to confirm present behavior and security properties.
The syndicated announcement and project link provide setup details, requirements, and the developer's fuller explanation of the local-first design.
