What Is the Value Proposition Canvas? A Customer-Fit Guide

Use the customer profile and value map to test whether an offer addresses real jobs, pains, and desired gains.

A brand strategy workspace with moodboard and planning materials.

The Value Proposition Canvas is a Strategyzer tool for comparing what a specific customer segment is trying to do with what an offer actually provides. One side describes customer jobs, pains, and gains. The other describes products and services, pain relievers, and gain creators. The canvas makes assumptions visible; it does not prove that people will buy.

Build the customer profile first

Choose one customer segment. Describe the task or progress people are trying to make, the obstacles and risks they encounter, and the benefits they want. Use interviews, observation, support tickets, and actual behavior where possible. Do not begin by listing your product features and then inventing customer pains to match them.

A small business buying press-release help, for example, may need to announce a verified opening on time, avoid factual errors, and reach a specific local audience. Its pain may be uncertainty about which information reporters need. A desired gain may be a reusable announcement page and a clear contact path. Those are hypotheses until customers confirm them.

Map the offer against the profile

01

Products and services

List what the customer would actually receive, including service, support, or documentation, not a vague promise of transformation.

02

Pain relievers

Explain how a feature or process reduces a specific obstacle. Prioritize important pains rather than claiming to solve every inconvenience.

03

Gain creators

Show how the offer helps produce a valued outcome. Be concrete about what is under your control and what depends on outside parties.

04

Evidence and gaps

Mark each connection as observed, tested, or assumed. The unmapped high-priority customer needs are opportunities to investigate, not something to hide.

Test fit outside the workshop

Strategyzer presents the canvas as a way to design and test fit between a customer profile and value map. A neat diagram can still reflect only the team's beliefs. Put a simple offer in front of the target segment, ask about recent behavior rather than hypothetical enthusiasm, and observe whether customers spend time, money, or effort to use it.

Repeat the canvas for materially different customer segments; one profile for everyone blurs trade-offs. Update it as evidence arrives and connect it to pricing, distribution, and the broader business model. The tool is a structured conversation, not a substitute for market research or a guarantee of product-market fit.
