Why Press Release Headlines Matter

A factual headline helps readers identify the news, its subject, and relevance before they open the release.

A headline is the first chance to tell a reader what changed. Journalists and other recipients often scan many announcements quickly, so a vague label or a slogan creates work for them. A clear headline does not guarantee coverage; it simply lets the audience decide whether the underlying information is relevant. Accuracy matters more than surprise.

What a useful headline does

Names the actor

Identify the company, group, or person responsible for the announcement when that helps recognition.

States the action

Use a concrete verb such as opens, launches, appoints, publishes, or expands. Avoid 'announces exciting news' without saying what it is.

Defines the scope

Add a city, date, audience, or limitation when it changes the meaning. Do not imply a nationwide launch from a one-city pilot.

Matches the body

A headline should not claim a finding stronger than the data, quote, or announcement can support.

A simple before-and-after test

Compare a hypothetical 'Company X Reinvents Access for Everyone' with 'Company X Opens Weekend Appointments at Two City Clinics.' The second is less dramatic but gives an identifiable event, place, and benefit to check. If the two clinics are only a proposed plan, the verb must change accordingly; precision is more important than a punchy line.

Read the headline without the company logo or introductory email. Would a person unfamiliar with the organization know what happened? If not, revise. Keep jargon and internal product names out of the main clause unless the audience already recognizes them. Avoid numbers that cannot be traced to a source and superlatives that require an undefined comparison.

Use the headline as a fact-check trigger

Verify the actor, action, date, geography, and any comparative claim against the approved fact sheet. Make the lede expand rather than contradict it. The AP's news values prioritize accuracy and honest context, and PRSA's code calls for corrections when information is wrong. A good headline helps readers reach the right story; it cannot rescue a release that lacks a real announcement.
